The Feodosia Money Museum

Feodosia Money MuseumThe Museum of Money in Feodosiya, opened in 2003, is a recent addition to the attractions of Feodosia. Even though it is relatviely new, it has already become well known far outside the city. From all the cities of the Ukraine only Feodosiya has twelve seperate periods of money issues. In addition, there has been coinage found in the vicinities of Feodosiya from various eras - from the ancient Greeks up to the White Guard.

A mint existed in Feodosiya in the pre-Christian era, with the first currency appearing here in the days of the Bosporskogo empire. Then Feodosiya began to change the governors, to that of other strong powers. At this period were minted the Genoese coins, then those of the Crimean khans. The 18th century saw the commencement of the minting of coins of the Russian empire.

The Museum of Money in Feodosiya is a private initiative, the concept of businessman Alexander Oleshchuku, with his personal collection becoming the basis for the creation of the museum exhibition. The exhibits of the museum are quite unique, with the most significant exhibit being a "tatraobol"coin, from the 4th century AD, and the only known example. Here it is also possible to find some strange coins - for example, a porcelain coin from Germany dated 1921, or currency from the non-existent country Selandija. In spite of the fact that the state as such doesn't exist, the currency has the quotation, beyng approximately equal to the US dollar.
