The owner of the rental flat in Feodosia met with resident Karadag Natural Reserve biologist Natali Kostenko during the summer of 2007 at the Dolphinarium to talk about the activities of the Reserve and and the bio diversity of the Black Sea area.
What is the focus of the research at the Dolphinarium?
The Dolphinarium research center carries out research into the different sea creatures in the environment of the sea, especially Crimea's Black Sea.
What is the environment like in this area for these creatures?
Well, the region is still an ideal place for these animals however we should be more careful with emissions from the sewage systems that flow into the Black Sea. Yet the Crimean coast is still the least polluted part of the whole Black Sea coast. As for the state of the environment in the inland around Karadag, please join one of our excursions. You will be so amazed at the beauty and the variety of nature in this region.
What is the role of the museum?
The museum has a very important role to play in our society. It exists to explain to people their role in the environment. As well as this education role we are also working very hard to save and preserve more than 5000 types of animals and plants in a small territory. Nearly all of these species are in the International Red Book of Endangered Species.
What can the public see from visiting there?
When people visit the Karadag Nature Reserve, they can visit the Karadag Nature Museum, the Aquarium and of course the Dolphinarium with its excellent show of Black Sea dolphins and seals.
What species are special to the area?
There are many species that are unique to this area because, sadly, nearly all of them are in the International Red Book now. There are many different species of sea animals, sea plants, insects and so on.
Do you have any exhibits you are really proud of?
The highlight of any visit to the Karadag Natural Reserve would have to be our show of Black Sea dolphins and seals. We are really proud of this. Also worth checking out is the large collection of fish from the Black Sea on display at the Aquarium. We pay a great deal of attention to educational ecological activities and that is why guests and visitors to Feodosiya are hospitably invited to visit the Dolphinarium, marine aquarium and the museum of nature and history of Karadag Nature Reserve. We hold a different annual exhibitions which we recommend.
Of wide popularity are the excursions on ecological trails by sea along the Karadag coastline and the most picturesque part of the unique mountains of Karadag.
