Feodosia Museum of Regional Studies
The Feodosia Museum of Regional Studies is one of the oldest museums in the Crimea, if not in the whole of the Ukraine.
The museum was opened on May 13th 1811 by then town governor M. Bronevskim as the Museum of an antiquity. The original museum building was a medieval mosque - itself testament to the rich and varied history of the Feodosia locality.

In 1871 the museum moved premises to a building constructed under the guidance of visionary artist I. K. Ayvazovsky. This building in 1925 became the residence of the artist.
After the Communist Revolution took place the museum switched its focus; from primarily having archaeology as the core area of interest, they shifted in the middle of the 1930's to the study of local history around Feodosia.
During World War II the museums collection was partially evacuated and partially plundered by invaders. The museum reopened with the cessation of hostilities in 1945.
In 1987 the Feodosia Museum of Regional Studies relocated again to new premises in a building constructed in the second half of the 19th century. The museum building is a wonderful example of architecture in the classical style.

As a result of the museum beginning its collection in the first decade of the 19th century, the Feodosia Museum of Regional Studies has one of the most formidable collections of items dating back to antiquity in the region, and these form the basis of the collection. Within the area of antiquities the museum is proud to hold some 12,000 items, including many unique antique and medieval artifacts, as well as archeological finds from excavations within and around Feodosiya as from other ancient cities and settlements of southeastern Crimea.
In the 20th century the museums collection was broadened with the addition of ethnographic and documentary materials connected with the history of Feodosiya in the 19th century and into the early years of the 20 th century.
In the later part of the 20th century the museum added to its collection materials documenting the establishment of Soviet authority in Crimea (as is common throughout the former Soviet Union), and also a significant body of exhibits and documents, devoted to the endeavours of the Soviet people during World War II. From the middle of the 20 th century a collection focusing on the natural world and including collections of minerals, fossils as well as an extensive herbarium was created.
The museum is also proud to hold more than 5000 coins within its' numismatic collection. The scientific library is a vast resource for scholars of the history of science, containing more than 11,000 volumes, some dating back hundreds of years and including some extremely rare editions.
The museum is laid out in three parts each dealing respectively with nature, pre-revolutionary times, and the Soviet era.

There is also a section on exhibit, devoted to the post-war restoration and the development of a national economy. Exhibits in this final hall reveal a great deal about modern Feodosiya, reflecting especially the economic development of the city. Samples of the industrial output of Feodosiya are presented.
The museum also hold interesting sessions through its "Outlook" programme.
The Feodosiya Museum of Regional Studies also plays host to travelling exhibitions.
