Feodosia Apartments:
Travelling to and from the Ukraine

There are a multitude of ways to travel to the Ukraine. From Russia in the north-east, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania and Moldova. The Ukraine is well connected with a good rail system, international buses and regular flights. Driving from other countries is also possible but not as highly recommended. An international drivers license, as well as the requisite customs forms if you bring your own car into Ukraine is required for this.

The first thing to think about when considering visiting the Ukraine is visa requirements. These do change so information regarding visas should be double checked with the Ukrainian representative in your country. A list of Ukrainian embassies and consulates can be found here. Good places to find out about information regarding visa requirements for the Ukraine includes the Lonely Planet's travel forum known as Thorn Tree. In the Eastern European section you will find a lot of posts from people who have travelled in the Ukraine recently and you can also post questions to find answers to your Ukraine travel related questions. Wikitravel's section on the Ukraine is also a useful source of background information regarding to travel to Ukraine.

Another site that is well worth looking at regarding Ukraine travel is My Ukraine.info. This site has detailed information about travelling in the Ukraine by train (announcements at Ukrainian Railway Stations are in Ukrainian, Russian and English so it isn't that difficult to find the right train and platform). Railway tickets can be booked up to 45 days in advance, and particularly in Summer it is recommended to do so as rail travel is considerably cheaper than flying and hence very popular. Most reputable travel agents can handle bookings for you; a small fee is charged for this. Try to avoid the cheapest class, platzkartny as this is usually a drunken vodka fest, a really good way to meet the locals but not to be entered into lightly.

My Ukraine.info also has a section on travelling by car which details the paperwork one needs to carry at all times while driving in the Ukraine. All traffic violations have to go before the courts - this is well worth remembering in the rare case you are asked to pay a fine. Also seat belts must be worn at all times while driving in the Ukraine.

The main airport in Ukraine is Boryspil Airport. Boryspil Airport is located about 40 kilometres from the downtown area of Ukraine's capital of Kiev. The other airports servicing foreign destinations are Lviv airport in western Ukraine which has connections with Warsaw, Prague, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Chicago. Odessa's airport on the Black Sea coast has international flights to and from Vienna and Moscow.

ukraine.co.uk is another useful website regarding travel to Ukraine. This English website is run by the British travel company Bob Sopel Travel. The site is not very well organised, but has some useful things such as a page showing railway connections from Kiev to major destinations such as Moscow, Odessa, Minsk and St. Petersburg as well as lesser known destinations such as Lutsk, Lugansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhiye, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Uzhgorod. If you are going to stay at the apartment in Feodosia you might find the Simferopol train times useful.

Being a travel agent, they also sell flights to the Ukraine, with flights from the main British airports.

Wikitravel - the companion site to the internet encyclopedia wikipedia has a useful Ukrainian Phrase book. Very easy just to print this out - it has phrases covering the basics of the Ukrainian language, including the variation of the Cyrillic or Russian alphabet in use in Ukraine. There are sections that cover transport including taking a taxi or getting the train, eating out, and phrases for dealing with the authorities. Not a very large document, but it will cover the basics for you in your travels to the Ukraine.
